精读就是在浏览、泛读的基础上，对需要精读的著作、论文，一字一句的字斟句酌，甚至连标点、注释都不要错过。精读可分四个层面：
（1）认知。做到字面读懂，甚至可以复述，背下来；
（2）理解。不仅读懂当下所读章节，而且可以和前后章节，甚至可以和已学的知识融会贯通，接通知识间的联系；
（3）质疑。在字面理解、融会贯通的基础上进一步读出了问题，提出质疑。读书读出问题，是科学研究的飞跃，科学哲学家波普尔就认为“科学开始于问题”，“科学家提出问题比解答问题更有意义”。导师要有问题意识，研究生要有问题意识。论文写作必须树立问题意识、问题中心。问题从哪里来？首先从读书中来，书读多了才有问题。当然更重要的是从实践中、从社会调查研究中提出问题；
（4）创新。有了问题，进一步读书和调查研究寻求解决问题的答案，做出理论创新。读书提出了问题，而且有了解决问题的方法、解决问题的答案，这样研究就有自己的创新成果。在这个基础上选题，做学位论文就是自己的创新。
（四）研究生读书要与记笔记相结合
读书笔记对于研究治学有重要意义。尽管现在有复印、电脑、网络等现代化手段，仍然不可能完全代替笔记，而是笔记的补充。笔记大体有四种形式。
